Algebra need not be a hodge-podge of abstractions and "rules." Algebra is built out of very definite ideas, that weave together to form a practical method for answering the questions: "How many, how much, how long. etc." Whoever once has answered one of these questions has performed Algebra: our everyday lives are permeated by the basic problems of Algebra. The answers to the above quantitative questions are, however, not always so close at hand.
Artistically live your way into the ideas of Algebra. Learn the language and notation used to express them in words and on paper. See clearly how the rules and special cases mentioned in Algebra books precipitate out of these general ideas. And, in so doing, develop a method capable of answering these more difficult "quantitative questions." Get the idea? Clarity. Fantasy. Fun!
