So Why Group Music Lessons?

So Why Group Music Lessons?

Group music lessons are a great way to engage students’ interest in their music subjects, or to help them develop supplementary skills. There are some who believe that group lessons are less effective than private music lessons, however this misconception stems from a lack of understanding of the difference between the two techniques and the fundamental advantages of either. It is important to keep the benefits of each method in mind when choosing which type of lesson to pursue. See which lesson method’s benefits fall more in line with your learning goals when deciding which method of study might be best for you.

Group Lessons have some pretty unique advantages. The social nature of a group lesson can decrease the stress levels for a student, while encouraging the development of instrument skill,  performance skills, rhythm, and peer collaboration.

Collaborative Skills

Students in group music lessons have the opportunity to build relationships with their peers. They learn to  relate and cooperate with one another in a structured learning environment. This social dynamic has a tendency to  make learning a more fun and enjoyable experience. It also has the added benefit of teaching students how collaboration enables them to create music where the sum is greater than its individual parts.

Lower Tuition

Group music lessons can be offered at a lower cost than than private music lessons since multiple students can share the same time.

Lower Stress

Students often feel less pressure and stress when they are learning in a group environment instead of a one to one basis. They are able to rely on their peers as an additional resource.

Performing Skills

Students who learn in a group environment tend to have a head start on their performing skills. They are often less inhibited from playing in front of their peers every week in class, which naturally builds performing confidence.

Longer Lessons

Private lessons often start as 30 minute lessons. All group music lessons are 50 minutes in length. The additional lesson time gives students more  opportunity to master skills, and allows students to participate in more learning activities during their lessons.
