So Why Private Music Lessons?

There is no single “right” way to study a particular subject, and people often have a preconcieved notion that private music lessons are better than group music lessons. In reality, neither is better than the other, but each approach has its own distinct advantages which are important to keep in mind when deciding the correct method of study for your particular goals.

There are many advantages to private music lessons, but the most tangible is that private music lessons are often the fastest way to advance and develop strong fundamentals in the instruments of your choice, especially for beginners. They are often also the best option for advanced musicians who need the individualized focus to push their skills and technique higher.

Accelerated Progress

Progress is almost always faster in private music lessons than in a group lesson setting. Your instructor has the time to build a private learning program for each student, and to tailor their teaching approach to the learning style of each individual student.

Skill Development

Certain advanced skills and techniques are better suited to one on one instruction. Hand position, fingering, interpretation, and expression are all subject matters that yield themselves to better to private music lessons.

Individual Attention

Private music lessons provide a student the benefit of their instructor’s exclusive focus. Learning an instrument is a complex endeavor; it is a multi-sensory experience, engaging a student’s abilities to learn though their sense of vision, hearing, touch, and their intellectual comprehension. Each student takes their journey through these experiences along their own unique path and private lessons make it possible for an instructor to guide this experience through the learning methods most most conducive for each student.

Appropriate Pace

Private music lessons will always move at an appropriate learning pace for each student because there are no other students to affect the learning pace.  Students enrolled in group lessons occasionally find their learning is outpaced or hindered by the average skill level that the lesson is taught for, and happens when their learning pace doesn’t match closely enough with other students in their class. Private music lessons can progress at the student’s learning pace, offering the flexibility to stop for concept review or repetition, and even to explore a tangent topic that a student has shown interest in.
